World’s Greatest Composers Unit Study – This curriculum is designed to be a very hands-on way for students (grades K-6) to learn about famous composers and to learn about the style, methods, and music of each featured composer. By the end of the study, students will be able to recognize the pieces of several composers, they will have also learned about different styles of music and will have gained a new appreciation for music in general.

Alfred’s Basic Piano Library Lesson Book – I love this series for teaching children how to play piano. The books are colorful, the songs entertaining, and the teaching method is very simple and step-by-step. There are several books in this series, so the students can progress to each higher level as they master the skills. This series also has corresponding Theory Workbooks that contain games and quizzes to help reinforce the principles presented in the lessons.

Big Red Book of EZ Piano Solos – I had this book when I was taking piano lessons as a child. It contains over 70 popular Christian songs to get your earlier piano players into playing praise songs and inspiring, wholesome music. Some of the songs include: "As the Deer", "I Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb", "In His Time", "Jesus Loves Even Me", "Make Me a Servant", "O Holy Night", "Open Our Eyes, Lord", "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross", "You Are My All in All", and more. If your child is more advanced in their lessons than this book, you may be interested in the higher level books that are in the same series, such as the Big Blue Book, or the Big Purple Book.

Martha Mier Music Books – Martha Mier is one of my favorite composers for early level pianists. Her music is easy to play but is so incredibly beautiful that it helps even the beginner students feel confident of their ability to produce greatness in their music. I especially love her “Romantic Sketches” series, her “Hymns for Meditation” book, and her “Christmas Delights” series for the holidays.
