The Donut Repair Club: At the Zoo

The Donut Repair Club: At the Zoo. If you’re not familiar with the “Donut Man” this is an older, classic film for kids that teaches Christian lessons. This particular video features a trip to the zoo in which kids learn important lessons, like the importance of obeying their parents and taking care of their siblings. It’s a musical as well, and the songs are both educational, worshipful, and rather catchy.

Field Trip to the Zoo

Field Trip to the Zoo. It should go without saying that an educator’s zoo theme should include a field trip to an actual zoo. Kids absolutely love going to the zoo and getting to see all the animals up close and for real!

Zoo Theme Craft

Zoo Theme Craft. I don’t have a link for this craft, since it’s just an image I found on Pinterest, but I love the idea and think it could be pretty simple to put together even without instructions, so here it is!

At the Zoo Emergent Reader

This cute little At the Zoo Emergent Reader is great for both preschool animal studies or early reader sight words.

Zoo Animal Beginning Sounds

Zoo Animal Beginning Sounds. Sadly, there is no link to this activity, it is just an image I found on Pinterest. I really wish there were a printable to go along with this activity, because I very much like the idea of having students go through the different zoo animals and figure out what letter they each start with. Even without a printable, this was too good an activity to pass up.

Build a Miniature Zoo

Building a Miniature Zoo can be lots of fun, and if you really engage with your child during this activity it can be a really great opportunity to discover and learn about the different animals.

Good Night, Gorilla

Good Night, Gorilla: Building the Story with Lego. If you’re not familiar with the book “Good Night, Gorilla”, it is a really cute children’s story about a zoo keeper that is so tired he doesn’t notice the monkey getting a hold of his keys and letting out all the animals in the zoo. There aren’t a lot of words in this book, just very simple diologue of “Good night gorilla”, “Good night elephant”, etc. The minimal dialogue leaves a LOT to the imagination and parents can tell the story any way they like.

Reading this book together and engaging in the activity of Building Your Own Lego Zoo can be a great opportunity to teach children about the different animals and about life a zoo, with fun and play built right into the lessons.

Pretend Zoo Dramatic Play for Preschoolers

Pretend Zoo Dramatic Play for Preschoolers. I remember doing something similar to this when I was little. Our family basically went through all of our toys and pulled out every single animal toy that we had be it Lego, Playmobile, Stuffed Animal, or whatever, and we grouped them together by type and created different cages for them around the house and even outside around our yard. We ended up with quite a lot of different animals, and after playing zookeepers a while we went on to invite friends and neighbors to come and tour our homeschool zoo. It ended up being one of our all-time favorite homeschooling activities, and yet so simple to carry out.

Zoo Fairy Garden

Zoo Fairy Garden. I just love creating fairy gardens with the kids, so when I came across this picture of a zoo themed fairy garden I got pretty excited. The possibilities are endless here, and it’s such a great hands-on activity that can be a great learning experience for kids of all ages!

Baby Zoo

Baby Zoo is a really cute book for children of various development stages, from "just-starting to speak" toddlers to avid readers that follows the story of an accident with paint at the zoo with baby animals. The painter then figures out a simple solution to get all animals clean and save the day. Your child will learn the name of each animal, colors, numbers, shapes, emotions and other important concepts. Throughout this tale your child will have plenty of opportunity to exercise with word pronunciation, color definition, memory, emotion recognition, counting, rhyme repetition and even shape recognition.

Follow the Trail: At the Zoo

Follow the Trail: At the Zoo. All the books in this series are really good. This particular book fits in well with our zoo theme. Kids really enjoy using their fingers to follow the glittery, bumpy, shiny trails along the pages of the book as they explore some of the animals found at the zoo and develop some good pre-writing motor skills.

Printable Animal Masks

These Printable Animal Masks add a degree of pretend play to any zoo or animal study.

Paper Plate Animal Crafts

Paper Plate Animals make for a very fun and fairly easy children’s craft. You could give your child a choice of making their favorite animal, or you could choose which animal craft to do depending on the study or theme you are doing at the time.

Zoo Animal Stick Puppets

These Zoo Animal Stick Puppets can be a lot of fun to play with, but this collection can also be used in several educational activities. The artwork is great, and there is a nice collection of jungle and rainforest animals, polar animals, safari animals, and even sea animals. And as if that isn’t enough, this website also has collections of dinosaurs and circus animals too.

Put Me in the Zoo (by Robert Lopshire)

Put Me in the Zoo is a fun story about an unusual animal that just doesn’t seem to fit in at the zoo. It’s a great book for exploring the different colors, but can also be a great introduction story for zoo or circus themed lessons.

YouTube: Put Me in the Zoo

Put Me in the Zoo. I couldn’t find a good animated version of this story, but this YouTube video was kind of cute, it takes the story and turns into into a song.

Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo

Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo. One of the very best computer games for kids now made available as a game app. In this game, the Cartown Zoo is almost ready to open, but all the baby animals have gone missing. It’s up to Putt-Putt to find the baby animals and to help each one of them be able to return home again. This game is great for children ages 4-7, promoting problem solving and critical thinking skills. I don’t usually like to pay for game apps, but this one is definitely worth it, and the price is just one single purchase – no hidden fees or in-app purchases.

Curious George At the Zoo App

Curious George At the Zoo App. This is a fun interactive game that allows kids to “help” George out as he takes care of several different animals at the zoo.
