What Were Castles For? (Usborne Books)
We LOVE Usborne books! So full of color and detail, so full of great information, and so very well written and illustrated to capture the attention and imagination of young learners. And this book, What Were Castles For?, definitely lives up to our expectations!
It’s not a “storybook” that you would read through from cover to cover, in fact, you might loose the audience of really young learners if you read everything all in one sitting. But it’s amazing to look through the pictures and read the little tidbits of information that is scattered all throughout the book. This is a book you can keep coming back to and learning a little bit here and there. It is also a book that can grow with your children and pass through multiple levels, multiple grades, and multiple age groups. A real gem to accompany any study of castles!

How to Draw a Castle
Easy Kids Drawing: How to Draw a Castle teaches kids how to draw a rather simple castle. This particular drawing series is one of my kids’ favorites. The instructions are easy to follow, and the person giving the instructions really does a good job of encouraging kids to try new things and even use their own imagination to make their drawings unique.

Joy is the Flag Flown High from the Castle of My Heart
Joy is the Flag Flown High from the Castle of My Heart is a great children’s song! It can also be a great way to incorporate meaningful, spiritual lessons, into your study of castles!
I like to combine this song with a simple lesson on how joy comes from putting Jesus and others before yourself (click on the image below for the link).
It’s also fun to do a paper craft where kids can design their own paper flag with the words “joy” on it – give them construction paper, glitter, glue, sequence, paint, or whatever craft items you like that they can use to decorate their “joy flag” and make it really pretty and special . . . Then have them wave the flag while they sing their new song!
Crown Paper Craft
Crown Paper Craft. Making a simple crown out of construction paper can be a very fun, but also very easy craft for kids. Let them decorate their crowns with any number of craft accessories (markers, construction paper, glitter glue, sequence, paint, etc), let the crowns dry and then assemble them to fit the child’s head. A great addition to any castle themed study!
