Bee and Bear Paper Craft

After watching the Why Do Bees Sting? Video on YouTube, my daughter wanted to make a picture of a bee stinging a bear, so we used construction paper to cut and glue shapes to make this paper craft picture.

Bee A Dreamer

Bee A Dreamer is a delightful story about a bee named Bella and her best friend, Sam, a timid but curious giraffe. Together they travel to a far away land and learn about the power of friendship and the reward of bravely pursuing your dreams.

The Bee-Attitudes

The Bee Attitudes. I searched long and hard to find this and finally one day it showed up on YouTube. It’s a classic audio recording from an old cassette tape, but the quality of the recording is actually really good considering how old it is. I grew up listening to this tape when I was little and I’m really excited to be able to share it with my children now, as well.

A musical performance by Jimmy and Carol Owens in which Sylvester Sylvester takes kids on an “imaginify” adventure to meet a hive of bees and to learn some great character building lessons along the way.

(Now we just need to find the sequel!)

Maya the Bee: Maya’s Garden

Maya the Bee is a cute little cartoon for kids. It’s not entirely accurate scientifically, but it’s fun and gives a kind of “inside look” at life in a beehive.

The Bumblebee Queen

The Bumblebee Queen. This book will give you a whole new appreciation for the incredible role that the queen bee has in creating and sustaining the hive. From her underground nest as spring warms the ground, to her efforts to build and care for her colony. All aspects of the bumblebee queen's lifecycle are fully explained in this book with fascinating details that even young children can understand

Turn This Book Into a Beehive, and 19 Other Experiments and Activities That Explore the Amazing World of Bees

Turn This Book Into a Beehive, and 19 Other Experiments and Activities That Explore the Amazing World of Bees. This book might be a little advanced for toddlers, but it is definitely a book they can “grow into”. My advice is to just read the sections that most interest your kids and not feel like you have to read every word in the book. As they get older, you can come back to it and teach them even more. Consider it an investment.

This book is amazing and highly informative, and in addition to just teaching kids about the world of bees it also gives some great ideas for science experiments to do with your kids. There’s a lot of fun and learning wrapped up in this one book!

Draw A Bee Paper Craft

Draw a Bee Paper Craft. I really love how this fun little art project turns out looking so amazing. The idea is pretty basic, you just get kids to draw a picture of a bee on one side of the paper, then they can use paint to add color to the page. Finally, when the pain has dried, glue on some honey combs made out of strips of cardboard or toilet paper rolls.

Fingerprint Bees

Fingerprint Bees. With this arts and craft project kids can use their fingers to paint a picture of a beehive with bees.

Honey Taste Testing

Honey Taste Testing. Honey can look and taste different depending on the types of flowers the bees collect nectar from and how it was processed when harvested. Kids will love exploring the different colors of honey and getting to sample the different flavors and single out their favorite.

You can use a Pollen Identification Color Guide to learn more about how the nectar of different plants produces different colors of honey.

Super Simple Candle Making

Super Simple Candle Making. In addition to giving us great tasting honey, bees also produce wax which is very useful for a lot of things, including the making of candles. Of course, your typical candles can be very difficult (and very time consuming) to make, but fortunately there is a quick and easy alternative that works really well for kids. The Toadly Handmade Beeswax Candle Making Kit has everything you need to help your children make their own candles in just minutes!

Waggle Dance to the Tune “Flight of the Bumblebee”

Waggle Dance to the Tune “Flight of the Bumblebee. Since our kids really love to dance I got them dancing to the classic Flight of the Bumblebee tune. Since bees dance as a means of communication, it can be a great time to teach kids about that aspect of bee life. Plus, if you really want to go all out, you could make it even more fun by making the kids some bee costumes and helping them to choreograph a little dance that they could perform for friends and family.

Bee Costume With a Stinger. A bee costume just wouldn’t be complete without a stinger! I love this particular idea from the Give It a Go Mama blog where they use a cotton stuffed party hat to make the stinger. So simple and just perfect!

Yellow and Black Tutu. This particular tutu is available for purchase on TripleBStitches Etsy Shop, but you could easily make your own bee tutu by following this Tulle Tutu Tutorial.

Pollination Scavenger Hunt

Pollination Scavenger Hunt. A study on bees just isn’t complete until you’ve actually gone outside and tracked down some bees to see them for yourself. You could just get up and go out with the kids to explore the different flowers to see if you can find any bees or other pollinating insects, or you can use this free printable from Creative Little Explorers to give your kids a mission. Either way, be sure to get the kids outside at some point during this study and let them know the thrill of seeing the bees at work in real life.

Here is a Beehive Flannel Rhyme (with free printables!)

Here is a Beehive Flannel Rhyme (with free printables!). Short, simple, not much to it, but young kids love this little rhyme:

Here is a beehive. Where are the bees? Hidden away where nobody sees.

Soon they come creeping out of the hive. 1-2-3-4-5! BUZZ!

The rhyme is especially fun and exciting when you make the bees play “peek-a-boo” and then suddenly have them all swarm out of the hive. It’s a big hit with preschoolers!
