Head Covering in Real Life

March 2017 – When we think of head coverings we often picture women from specific religious backgrounds with very “old fashioned” or “counter-cultural” looking styles. We don’t see many examples of modern day head covering styles, or examples of what covering your head can look like for the modern day woman. But quite honestly, you don’t need to feel like you’re passing through a time machine or feel like you’re a “religious fanatic” in your attempts to live up to your convictions. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, the whole idea of covering your head should be a personal conviction and not a fashion trend by any means. But if modern fashion is the only thing left that is holding you back from covering your head there are many, many options for how you can cover your head and still feel comfortable in your own clothes and less self-conscious about going out in public.

Here are some very “every day” and “real life” examples of head coverings for the modern, yet modest, woman . . .

Basic Bandana

This style is especially popular among house wives and busy moms, though it looks good on just about anyone in any setting. It’s quick and simple; all you need is a simple bandana folded into a triangle and tied in a knot at the back of your head. You can even get the bandanas in silky textures with different fun prints for a less traditional look.

Of course, several women complain that the basic bandana makes them look too much like a pirate, which is why I like this particular style, where some of the hair is left hanging out in front for a little “accent” and a more feminine appearance.

Around the House

This wide headband style is also perfect for around the house or for the physically active woman. You can make it out of the same bandanas mentioned above or actually purchase wide cloth headbands, lightweight sports headbands, or even elastic backed headbands if you’re looking for a better fit.

Dressed Up or Dressed Down

Taking a long scarf and tying it in back so the ends hang down long under the hair can be a good “any setting” style. Whether you’re going out in public, or staying close to home this style is both nice and simple. Especially ideal for days when you don’t know what to expect, it’s a really good “any occasion” style.

Sportsy Soccer Mom

Head coverings don’t jut have to be scarves and wraps, they can come in the form of hats too! How about a nice cap for sports or outdoor events?

Fashionable Casual Look

This style is one of my personal favorites. It requires a longer scarf, and especially looks good with a scarf that has corner tassels.

Here are a few links for corner tassel scarves on Amazon:

Youthful Highschool Style

Once again, you don’t need to wrap or tie in order to cover your head, just a simple hat can be highly fashionable while still serving the purpose for covering.

This is also known as the Criss Cross head wrap. You can take a regular thin scarf and twist it in this style, or you can buy pre-twisted headbands.

Business Woman

Here is a more sophisticated look that can work well for business meetings or settings that require a more professional look.

Working Woman

If your work place does not allow you to wear hats or head scarves, you could can still wear the scarf around your neck and then put it on during your break periods or in private when you are praying. Wearing the scarf around your neck is still considered professional, and if you tie it loosely it can be very easy to put it on and off depending on the setting you’re in.

Top Knot

Also known as the “rabbit ears”, this style looks really cute and is very simple.

Prayer Shawls

A lot of women have a prayer shawl that they will take with them to church or use in their personal prayer times. If you get a light weight shawl you can drape it over your shoulders and wear it as a normal part of your dress and then lift it up to cover your head during times of prayer.
